Key Responsibilities Functional Safety & Systems Engineering
- Contribute across the functional safety lifecycle for autonomy and energy systems from concept through deployment.
- Support hazard identification and risk assessment activities including HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA, and fault tree analysis.
- Develop, allocate, and maintain safety requirements across system, hardware, and software levels.
- Collaborate with Safety Specialists to ensure compliance with IEC 61508 and internal safety processes.
- Embed safety into system architectures, design reviews, and technology selection.
- elicit, analyse, and manage requirements across all system levels, including functional safety and energy management.
- Lead the creation of formalised requirements and safety artefacts.
- Ensure requirements are clear, traceable, verifiable, and aligned with system objectives.
- Support hardware and software design and verification, with a focus on safety-critical functions.
- Lead the selection and integration of sensors, compute platforms, communication devices, and other hardware.
- Evaluate hardware options for safety capability, reliability, redundancy, and lifecycle support.
- Work with suppliers to source and assess new or replacement technologies.
- Stay informed on emerging technologies, safety-certified components, and industry standards.
- Deliver system designs, interfaces, specifications, and procedures.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to embed safety and quality principles into designs.
- Develop and maintain system models including functional behaviour, interfaces, and failure modes.
- Develop and review V&V plans, including safety-focused testing strategies.
- Ensure all requirements are verifiable, with particular emphasis on safety requirements.
- Lead or support verification activities and drive timely resolution of defects based on safety and risk.
- Ensure evidence is produced to support safety arguments, internal approvals, and compliance needs.
- 8–10+ years in systems engineering or functional safety roles.
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle processes.
- Solid knowledge of control theory, automation, and system behaviour in safety-critical environments.
- Demonstrated experience with IEC 61508 in mining, industrial automation, or heavy equipment.
- Understanding of safety-in-design principles (SIL determination, hazard analysis, etc.).
- Experience with system interaction artefacts (e.g., N2 charts).
- Familiarity with embedded systems, RTOS, CAN bus, Ethernet, and industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with SysML or similar modelling frameworks.
- RF experience highly regarded.
- Mining or heavy industrial environment experience highly regarded.
- Awareness of cyber-security in industrial system design.
- Adaptable and comfortable navigating shifting project priorities.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Analytical, detail-oriented, and committed to quality.
- Passionate about technology, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Strong mentorship abilities and commitment to developing junior engineers.
- Able to navigate complex technical environments and make sound decisions.
