Position Purpose

Sitting within the Asset Management Engineering team at the Port operations site, the Technical Writer is responsible for creating, updating, and standardising high-quality technical documentation for port infrastructure, heavy machinery, and fixed plant engineering assets.
This role acts as the bridge between engineering teams, maintenance crews, and operations, translating complex technical configurations, vendor manuals, and engineering designs into clear, actionable, and safety-compliant frontline procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Documentation Development & Maintenance
  • Draft, review, and update Standard Working Instruments (SWIs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), asset maintenance manuals, and isolation diagrams.
  • Convert complex Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals and engineering designs into streamlined, standardised workplace instructions.
  • Maintain a sharp focus on asset management documentation, ensuring clear guidelines for preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on port assets.
  1. Stakeholder Collaboration & Field Verification
  • Partner directly with Maintenance Engineers, Reliability Engineers, and Asset Managers to extract technical information and understand system updates.
  • Spend time in the field at the port operations site to perform document "walk-downs" with technicians, validating that written procedures accurately match live field environments.
  • Facilitate review sessions with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to ensure technical accuracy and operational viability.
  1. Document Control & Compliance
  • Strictly adhere to internal document control management systems, ensuring appropriate revision tracking, archiving, and approval workflows.
  • Ensure all documentation aligns seamlessly with rigid corporate safety management frameworks and risk mitigation policies.
  • Assist in auditing existing documentation libraries to identify gaps, outdated material, or non-compliant procedures.
Key Selection Criteria

Experience & Qualifications
  • Years of Experience: 1 to 5 years of professional experience as a Technical Writer, specifically within an industrial, engineering, mining, rail, maritime, or heavy manufacturing environment (highly preferred over IT/software writing).

Technical Skills
  • Industrial Literacy: Strong capability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), schematics, and mechanical manuals.
  • Document Management: High proficiency with advanced MS Word functionality (templates, styles), document control platforms, and ideally exposure to asset management systems like SAP PM.
  • Field Aptitude: Comfort and willingness to work in a 12-hour operational port environment, adapting to heavy industrial site contexts.
Soft Skills
  • Interpersonal Communication: Proven ability to build rapport and confidently interview both site-based tradespeople and office-based professional engineers.
  • Detail-Oriented: Exceptional eye for consistency, structural formatting, grammar, and clarity.
  • Adaptability: Ability to manage multiple documentation priorities in a fast-paced, roster-driven operational environment.
